Solving the mysteries of quantum systems

Quantum computers may not be as distant a reality as once believed. A collaborative team of chemists and physicists has made enormous steps in understanding decoherence – one of the greatest obstacles in quantum computing. Decoherence is the loss of information from a quantum system into its environment, and controlling it is essential for making a quantum computer. The team was led in part by Philip Stamp, an Associate in CIFAR’s Quantum Materials and Nanotechnology programs. By using magnetic molecules to understand quantum systems, these scientists have accelerated the possibility of developing exceptionally fast quantum computers.
