Women we love: Siwan Anderson

Women we love: Siwan Anderson

"Sometimes quietly and sometimes as in a violent crash, many of us collide with a profound awakening that will inextricably change our lives forever."

In a recent Chatelaine magazine feature, "Women We Love," this is how they described the way in which Siwan Anderson, an economist and a member of the Institutions, Organizations and Growth program, arrived at her topic of research.

Dr. Anderson showed that as many as 200 million women and girls around the world are demographically "missing." She believes that an overwhelming proportion of female deaths in the poorest countries are the result of inequality, preventable diseases and poor medical care. These inequities are found at every stage of women's lives from birth to old age. Particularly alarming are the fatalities believed to result from deliberate acts of violence.
