Knowledge Mobilization Internship

Position Profile:

The intern will be responsible for supporting the activities of CIFAR’s Knowledge Mobilization (KM) team with a particular focus on CIFAR’s program in Quantum Information Science. This program brings together researchers from computer science, quantum computing and theory of computation, mathematical and atomic physics, optics, electronic and information engineering and applied mathematics to share insights and create new understandings about quantum computing. The primary goal of this internship is to undertake foundational work on a new report that will provide an overview of the global landscape of quantum computing technologies, research strategies and initiatives in industrial and public sectors, as well as published or in-development national strategies on quantum technologies, quantum computing, and relevant areas of application (e.g., cybersecurity). This report will be aimed at an educated, lay audience directly involved in, or interested by quantum technologies, including stakeholders in the government, research and business communities.

The publication will build on the template in scope and approach established by CIFAR’s report on national AI strategies, Building an AI World, that was published in 2018. The intern may also support the development of in-person engagements between the Quantum Information Science program and key non-academic stakeholders by identifying organizations and individuals, in Canada and abroad, that would benefit from the knowledge and insights developed through this publication.

Through this position, the intern will develop career-building skills in knowledge translation, communications, stakeholder engagement, and project management. The project will be supported by training and mentorship provided by the Knowledge Mobilization Publications Officer at CIFAR.


For this position, the intern will:

  • Conduct research to identify the current commercial and industrial players in the development of quantum technologies, and their relevant technologies;
  • Survey the global landscape of national policies and coordinated government strategies for quantum technologies;
  • Identify areas of societal impact and applications for quantum technologies, and the suite of policies being developed to support or address these areas;
  • Support the KM Publications Officer and KM Director, Innovation in understanding how the global landscape of quantum technologies will inform CIFAR's KM activities in support of its related research programs;
  • Assist in data analysis and drafting of a report that summarizes the results of the research and landscape mapping;
  • Identify potential knowledge users to receive the report, and potential venues and channels for knowledge sharing within these communities;
  • Perform other duties as required and provide support for other Institute initiatives as assigned.
