CIFAR statement on the executive order regarding travel into the United States
CIFAR (The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) expresses its grave concern over the US presidential executive order barring people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. This executive order runs counter to the scientific ideals of the free flow of people and ideas, and threatens to damage the international cooperation that is essential to science and human progress.
CIFAR is a global research institute with close to 400 fellows based in 18 countries who hold meetings and workshops around the world. We know that the world’s challenges are best solved by bringing together scientists and scholars with diverse viewpoints and experiences. The travel ban runs counter to this reality, and to the values of science.
If the executive order remains in place, CIFAR and its Program Directors will be carefully considering whether it is essential to hold program meetings in the US. CIFAR will work to ensure that invited researchers from any part of the world are able to participate in upcoming meetings.
