In Memoriam: Dr. Stefan Dupré (1936-2012)
On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, David Dodge, Chair of the Board of CIFAR, issued the following statement:
It is with great sadness that we learned about the passing of CIFAR President Emeritus J. Stefan Dupré on December 6, 2012. During his time at CIFAR, Stefan was respected for his leadership in shaping the Institute’s vitality, putting it on a sustainable course, and for overseeing the evolution of its research programs in superconductivity and gravity to capitalize on the exciting advances in these emerging fields.
Stefan served as CIFAR’s President between 1996-1999, after holding senior academic positions, including Dean of the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto and founding Chair of the Ontario Council of University Affairs. He became a professor of political science at the University of Toronto in 1963, and eventually Professor Emeritus.
Prior to his presidency, Stefan was a member of the National Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He was past-president of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, and received the Institute’s Vanier Medal. He was also named to the Order of Canada.
We remember Stefan’s leadership at CIFAR as an important part of the Institute’s legacy. He will be deeply missed.
