Inaugural CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars appointed
18 early-career researchers receive prestigious two-year appointment including $100,000 each in research support
CIFAR is pleased to welcome the inaugural cohort of 18 exceptional early-career investigators to the new CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars Program. The program funds and supports researchers within five years of their first academic appointment, helping them build research networks and develop essential skills needed to become leaders in global research. Members of the program’s first cohort come from Austria, China, Israel, the United States and Canada. Their diverse areas of research interest range from clean energy, child and brain development, and learning in machines and brains, to quantum computing and economics.
“This group of phenomenal young investigators is the future of research,” said CIFAR President and CEO Alan Bernstein. “The enthusiasm and energy that they bring to research is invaluable for developing new ways of thinking, new techniques in science and innovative solutions for the challenges facing our world today. CIFAR is thrilled to be able to provide opportunities for them to advance their skills.”
The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars will join close to 400 of the world’s very best researchers who are addressing some of the most interesting and important questions facing the world today. Each scholar will receive $100,000 in research support and is appointed to one of CIFAR’s 14 research programs for two years. Scholars have the opportunity to present their research and receive feedback from the distinguished fellows in their programs, contribute to ongoing discussions within the program and forge new collaborations with the CIFAR fellows who come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
The program will also support the extension of scholars’ research beyond the usual academic boundaries by facilitating opportunities to exchange ideas with leading knowledge users across sectors, including policy-makers, business leaders and practitioners who may benefit from engaging with these outstanding young researchers.
The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program is enabled by the generous support of the Azrieli Foundation, which supports and operates a range of initiatives in various fields, including the promotion of excellence in education and access to education, scientific and medical research, Holocaust education, and the advancement of excellence in architecture and the arts.

Their appointment term began on July 1, 2016. The next open call for scholars will begin March 1, 2017, with the aim of expanding the program’s reach to 40 scholars and six continents.
