Alexei Ourjoumtsev and his team specialize in quantum engineering of light.
They use a tiny cloud of cold atoms trapped inside a specially shaped optical resonator to make particles of light interact with each other and engineer both the particle-like and the wave-like aspects of light at the quantum level. They plan to use this experimental platform to generate non-classical light for precision measurements, develop quantum logic gates for long-range quantum communications, and simulate more sophisticated quantum systems.
They also develop new technologies to make these experiments, and many others, possible. In particular, by transposing adaptive optics techniques initially designed for biological applications, they recently developed an ultra-compact optical system for imaging and manipulating cold atoms in complex and cluttered quantum engineering setups.
