CIFAR is mourning the shocking loss of 176 lives in the crash of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 outside Tehran on January 8, 2020.

“The terrible impacts of this tragedy are being felt across Canada and around the world,” says Alan Bernstein, CIFAR President & CEO. “Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of the victims. We mourn not only the loss of life, but also the lost potential of bright students and researchers who were changing the world with ideas.”

Reports indicate 63 of the passengers on board were Canadians and at least 40 were students and researchers at Canadian universities, headed back to Canada to start a new academic term after visits with family in Iran over the holidays.

Among those on the plane were students and professors affiliated with 13 Canadian universities. Official statements including the names of the deceased have been issued by: the University of Alberta, Carleton University, Dalhousie University, the University of Guelph, the University of Manitoba, McMaster University, the University of Ottawa, Université de Québec, Saint Mary’s University, the University of Toronto, University of Victoria, Western University, and York University.
