Established in 1982, CIFAR is a Canadian-based global research organization with a vision to deepen our understanding of the world, creating knowledge that enriches human life and leads to a better future. At the core of CIFAR’s mission is a deeply rooted commitment to excellence in research at the highest level.

CIFAR’s unique interdisciplinary research programs are connecting the world’s best minds through its global research network of nearly 400 fellows and advisors based in 17 countries; this network includes some of the most honoured and cited researchers in the world. CIFAR has achieved more than 30 years of success generating extraordinary research advances in health, technology, society, and a sustainable earth. The work of CIFAR’s research fellows and advisors is transforming our understanding of population health, the Earth’s evolution, early brain development, artificial intelligence, the effect of institutions on prosperity, and much more.

The Government of Canada is investing $125M in a Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Program, led by CIFAR, to ensure the country retains, attracts, and trains top research talent in deep learning and reinforcement learning. As Executive Director, you will build and manage the AI Program, establishing and maintaining productive relationships with the leadership of three AI Institutes in Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto, and with key stakeholders in government, the country’s universities, and the private sector. Reporting to the President & CEO of CIFAR and a member of the Executive Team, you will support the start-up and development of a game-changing AI ecosystem, and champion a strong foundation of research excellence on which to build Canadian pre-eminence in AI.

In addition to strong relationship-building abilities, you have post-graduate education, a thorough understanding of academic research in Canada, and a reputation for diligence, sound management, negotiation skills, and keen insight. A collaborator and influencer, you will work with the AI Institutes on strategic and operational planning, coordination of effort and resource allocation, monitoring and evaluation of results, building of effective and useful relationships, intellectual property policies, communications, and public awareness.

Working collaboratively with CIFAR’s VP Research, you will advance the new Canada-CIFAR Chairs in AI Program and support an International Scientific Advisory Committee in reviewing and advising on the selection of nominated Chairs and on the scientific management of the AI Strategy. You will also support a National Programs Committee that will provide advice to CIFAR on programs, training, and funding that are national and collaborative in scope.

This new role requires a strong administrative leader who plans well, builds positive stakeholder relationships, and adjusts nimbly to changing circumstances. This is an exciting opportunity to build a program from the ground up and play a pivotal role in the future of AI in Canada.
